U.S. Supreme Court Greenlights Dismantling of The Board of Education

**Statement on Supreme Court’s Decision to Gut the Department of Education**

Today’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to greenlight nearly 1,400 layoffs at the Department of Education—and to allow ongoing efforts to dismantle its mission—is a dangerous setback for students, families, and the future of our public schools.

This ruling shifts critical authority and accountability away from federal oversight and toward state and local jurisdictions that are often underprepared to protect the rights of marginalized students—especially those with disabilities, in rural areas, or facing economic hardship. As Justice Sotomayor warned in her dissent, this approach risks “unleashing untold harm,” leaving vital civil rights protections and student support systems vulnerable.

We must not accept a diminished federal role. Our schools deserve leadership that defends equitable access to education, champions accountability, and safeguards every child’s right to learn. As a nurse, advocate, and candidate for Iowa’s 4th District, I will stand against any policy that undermines our commitment to education, ignores rural and under-resourced communities, and weakens federal oversight designed to protect students nationwide.

8 Ways Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill" Will Affect Iowan's

NEWS: “Big, Beautiful Bill” Brings Big Cuts for Iowans

The Trump administration’s new legislation—dubbed the “Big, Beautiful Bill”—will bring sweeping changes to Iowa, with serious consequences for working families, rural hospitals, students, and farmers.

According to the Des Moines Register, the bill slashes funding for Medicaid, nutrition programs like SNAP, and student loan relief, while redirecting resources toward expanded ICE enforcement and tax cuts for corporations.

It also threatens Iowa’s rural health care, limits support for clean energy and biofuels, and could increase tax burdens for everyday Iowans while rewarding the wealthy.

This is a wake-up call. Iowans deserve better than cuts to care, education, and opportunity. We need policy that invests in our communities—not strips them down.

 Iowa Deserves Better

I am outraged that every single Iowa Senator and House Representativevoted in favor of the so-called “Big, Beautiful Bill”—a reckless piece of legislation that attacks the wellbeing of everyday Iowans.

This bill slashes Medicaid, guts nutrition assistance programs like SNAP and WIC, strips funding from rural hospitals, abandons student loan relief, and undercuts our clean energy and biofuels industries. I

t does all this while handing billions in tax breaks to the wealthy and expanding ICE enforcement with zero oversight or accountability.

Let’s be clear: every Iowa lawmaker who supported this bill chose party loyalty over people, politics over principle, and corporate interests over working families.

Iowa deserves leaders who will protect health care, education, clean energy, and civil rights—not vote them away behind closed doors.

I will never stand by while the needs of Iowans are ignored and dismantled. This campaign is about putting people first—and fighting for every single one of us.
